BackgroundThe prevalence of sleep disorders and incontinence in inpatient long-term care facilities is as high as 80%. Among other things, this leads to sleep deprivation and a significantly reduced quality of life for residents. It also places an increased burden on professional caregivers. The SLEEP-IN project combines two intervention approaches for promoting sleep and managing incontinence: the multimodal, care-led complex intervention MoNoPol-Sleep and a digital assistive technology from the EASY project. Key components of the intervention to be developed include informational sessions and training, the application of six key principles for promoting sleep (offering appropriate daytime activities, establishing bedtime routines, creating a comfortable sleep environment, reevaluating nighttime care routines, monitoring physical and psychological causes of sleep disturbances, and reflecting on the use of sleep medication), the development of facility-specific measures to promote sleep and the development of individualized measures to promote sleep, as well as the use of sensors to measure nocturnal incontinence episodes.
Objective
  1. To improve the sleep quality of residents in inpatient long-term care.
  2. Optimizing incontinence care and promoting continence among residents in inpatient long-term care.
  3. To improve the quality of life for residents in inpatient long-term care.
  4. To reduce the workload of professional caregivers in inpatient long-term care.
MethodsThe focus of the first project year is on project development, recruiting interested facilities, and preparing for the subsequent implementation phase.
