| Background | People with multiple sclerosis (MS) face many challenges. Those affected require intensive, highly individualized, and timely counseling and decision support in collaboration with their physician—services that are not included in the standard catalog of healthcare benefits. Treatment decisions are often made based on information provided by the pharmaceutical industry during brief consultations that do not adequately address the uncertainty patients experience immediately after diagnosis. However, patients have a significant need for information about the disease, particularly regarding lifestyle measures and complementary therapies. To obtain information, MS patients rely heavily on the internet. However, diverse and conflicting information may exacerbate existing uncertainties. |
| Goal | To develop a digital platform that supports people with MS in managing their condition. In the long term, to integrate digital programs into the scope of coverage under statutory health insurance (GKV). |
| Methods | Multiphase mixed-methods study. POWER@MS consists of two complementary clinical trials (POWER@MS 1 and 2) conducted in parallel. In POWER@MS 1, people newly diagnosed with MS participate in the “Optimune” program for one year. “Optimune” offers participants comprehensive support in navigating life after an MS diagnosis. This includes making a decision regarding immunotherapy based on the concept of shared decision-making, support in coping with the disease, and lifestyle guidance. In POWER@MS 2, self-directed relapse management is promoted through an individualized, interactive online training program. The program includes evidence-based patient information as well as moderated chats that incorporate elements of peer counseling. The goal of the intervention is to enable participants to manage corticosteroid therapies in a self-directed and informed manner. |
