BackgroundPeople with a migration background who encounter language barriers in healthcare due to insufficient knowledge of the German language face particular challenges when admitted to a hospital for cancer treatment. The current healthcare system is often inadequately prepared to address these challenges.
ObjectiveThe goal of the planned project is to implement a nursing-led, integrative care model for this target group across various areas of oncology care; this will be demonstrated at the University Hospital of Cologne. Through a structured information management and follow-up program throughout the entire process—from admission and treatment through discharge—the project aims to increase patients’ awareness, health literacy, and satisfaction, as well as improve the quality of care. The primary outcome measure is the study participants’ need for support and their ability to cope with problems.
Methods

The mixed-methods study comprises three phases:

Phase 1: Preparation: Literature review, needs assessment (qualitative and quantitative surveys and observations of all target groups), development of a logical model, establishment of a PPI advisory committee

Phase 2: Development & Feasibility Testing: Development and testing of the intervention components (technical testing, qualitative and quantitative surveys of all target groups)

Phase 3: Pilot: Outcomes: Controlled before-and-after study; process evaluation: qualitative and quantitative analyses (based on the logical model); economic analysis: assessment of intervention costs
