| Background | Communication and the associated language skills are key components of person-centered medical and nursing care and are crucial for access to care, quality of care, and patient safety. When interacting with patients who do not speak the language of the care team, a variety of risk situations can arise (van Rosse et al., 2016). Furthermore, intercultural and language barriers in medical and nursing care can lead to disadvantages if, for example, physical or mental symptoms and deficits are not recognized and treated, or are recognized and treated too late. In addition, informed participation is hindered. In the short, medium, or long term, this results in health inequity. Due to their close proximity to patients, nursing professionals play a key role in care. |
| Objective | The project aims, using the University Hospital of Cologne (UKK) as a case study, to gain relevant insights into the oncological care of patients with migration-related language barriers, to identify barriers in the care structures for this target group, and to develop potential solutions to address linguistic and cultural barriers in care. By generating these insights, it will be possible to plan the development of a nursing-led, diversity-sensitive, and integrative care model that is tailored to the needs and requirements of the target group. |
